Sunday’s second last sixteen match
takes place at Soccer City and Mexico will be looking for revenge
after being beaten by Argentina at this stage four years ago. While
Javier Aguirre’s team deserved to qualify from Group A, they have a
couple of flaws which might result in them being second best against
Diego Maradona’s team.
Defensively, they are prone to making
silly errors, as they demonstrated against England and Holland in the
warm-up matches for the World Cup, not to mention the first game
against South Africa. It will be interesting to see how they cope
with the returning Carlos Tevez and Gonzalo Higuain, who were both
rested for the South Korea match.
While Mexico might have plenty of
possession, Guillermo Franco has missed a series of chances and it’s
puzzling that the manager doesn’t start with Javier Hernandez, who
has the pace to trouble a creaking Argentina defence. The favourites
will have Lionel Messi looking for his first goal and it’s surely
an impossibility that he’ll go the whole tournament without
scoring.

Power Rating
Squad (4/5)
There is no questioning the sheer talent available
Squad (3/5)
Many in Mexico think that it lacks the quality of earlier World Cups, especially in 2002, but as it proved in the Gold Cup, if the squad is motivated and properly directed they can inflict real damage.
Coach (2/5)
Simply too much of a loose cannon for anyone to feel comfortable
Coach (4/5)
Probably the best Mexico could have. Aguirre knows the players, has transformed virtually every group of footballers he has encountered and would be confident of doing the same in South Africa.
Attack (5/5)
This is the time for Messi to shine
Attack (3/5)
When it is going well, Mexico look pretty good going forward. They were 4-0 up inside 20 minutes in a friendly against Bolivia and destroyed the United States on their own soil. But they can sometimes be lightweight.
Defence (3/5)
Their inability to keep consistent clean sheets is a worry
Defence (3/5)
Aguirre has drilled the importance of clean sheets as Mexico prepare for South Africa and after the embarrassing lapses under Eriksson, his charges are beginning to respond.
