Will England come to life after a
selection of poor performances during the group stage? While the
nation seems to think that Fabio Capello’s team can go all the way
after beating Slovenia 1-0, they have not played particularly well in
South Africa and big improvement is needed if they are to win in
Bloemfontein.
Indeed, it’s puzzling to see the
bookmakers quoting Germany at a bigger price. This was a team that
beat Australia 4-0, beat Ghana 1-0 and dominated against Serbia for
large parts of their 1-0 defeat, despite only having ten men on the
pitch. Miroslav Klose will return from suspension for this game and
Joachim Loew has two in-form midfielders which could cause problems
for the England defence.
Mesut Ozil has been one of the stars of
the tournament and his goal against the Black Stars will have Fabio
Capello looking for ways to close him down. Bastian Schweinsteiger
was an integral part of the Bayern Munich team that reached the
Champions League final. In short, Germany should not be outsiders for
this game.
PREDICTION:
GERMANY +0 ON ASIAN HANDICAP @ 2.05 with bwin
Power Rating
Squad (3.5/5)
With the exception of Philipp Lahm and Michael Ballack nothing about the German squad screams ‘world class’ but they are always so much more than the sum of their parts.
Squad (4/5)
There are definite weaknesses, especially in defence and with the goalkeeper but this is a well-balanced and, above all, highly disciplined side that can go far.
Coach (4/5)
Low may lack Klinsmann’s flair and flamboyance but he is far more tactically astute. The two wins over Russia proved once more Germany can deal with serious opposition, which is what they will face from the start.
Coach (5/5)
It is hard to think of anyone better than this art-loving Italian to direct England. Thus far the highlight of his career was overseeing Milan's 4-0 demolition of Barcelona in the 1994 Champions League final. This could top it.
Attack (3/5)
Before the March friendly against Argentina, this would have been a four out of five but in Munich Germany struggled so badly against a side likely to be their quarter-final opponents that there are some serious doubts.
Attack (4.5/5)
Plenty of options that all revolve around Wayne Rooney. Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe have proved their international credentials while Gerrard and Lampard are capable of providing goals from midfield.
Defence (3.5/5)
The spotlight, naturally, will be on Rene Adler and in qualification there were one or two cracks evident, exploited, oddly enough, by Finland who put three past them in Helsinki and drew 1-1 in Hamburg.
Defence (3/5)
Rio Ferdinand and John Terry have real class but the fitness concerns over Ashley Cole mean there is nobody of comparable ability at full-back and this plus the lack of a great keeper mean England will always be vulnerable.
