During
the 2006 World Cup, Italy adopted a typically cautious approach to
matches, with all three of their group games yielding two goals or
less. Against Ghana and Czech Republic, the team managed 2-0
victories and we could well see something similar at the Greenpoint
Stadium on Monday.
Indeed,
Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino clearly regards the match against the
Azzurri as a 'bonus game', with the south American side confident
that they can get the better of Slovakia and New Zealand to qualify
from Group F along with Marcello Lippi's team. Therefore, while
Barrios, Santa Cruz and Cordozo are excellent strikers, they may not
see too much of the ball.
Lippi
has blended experience with fresh blood in 2010 and the Italians
still boast one of the world's best keepers in Gianluigi Buffon.
With Fabio Cannavaro and Giorgio Chiellini as centre halves, it's a
Juventus trio that should help the Azzurri keep a clean sheet and
squeak a goal or two at the other end of the pitch.
PREDICTION:
ITALY TO WIN 1-0 OR 2-0 (6.0 &
6.0 with bwin)
Power Rating
Squad (3.5/5)
It is essentially the same team that won the World Cup in 2006, which brings advantages in terms of experience and problems in terms of age.
Squad (3/5)
This is a remarkably well-balanced squad who have proved they can punch above their weight. Much will depend on confidence within the camp.
Coach (5/5)
By winning the Champions League, the World Cup and the Scudetto, Lippi has already established himself as one of his country’s greatest coaches. A repeat would place him as one of the all-time greats.
Coach (3/5)
He rarely makes headlines but Martino has proved to be one of the most effective managers Paraguay have had in years.
Attack (3/5)
Luca Toni, Iaquinta, and Inzaghi are a formidable combination but many would prefer a few younger models.
Attack (3.5/5)
At their best, Paraguay have a very dangerous array of midfielders and forwards.
Defence (4/5)
Nobody defends like the Italians and the experience gained in Serie A and for the Azzurri will be brought to bear in this campaign.
Defence (2.5/5)
Were Chilavert at his peak, then Paraguay would go into the tournament with a bit more confidence but the back four did the job in qualification.
