The
Ivory Coast are trying to put a brave face on it, although Didier
Drogba is highly unlikely to play against Portugal after injuring his
arm in a friendly against Japan. The Chelsea forward is hugely
important to the team, although he will have to watch the Elephants
try and get something from the game in Port Elizabeth.
Portugal
are also missing a key player in Nani, although manager Carlos
Queiroz would have been a lot more dismayed if Cristiano Ronaldo had
sustained a collarbone injury. The Real Madrid forward is one of the
few players in the world that can singlehandedly win matches on his
own and he will be keen to demonstrate his ability at the Nelson
Mandela Bay Stadium.
The
Portuguese have looked strong in the warm-up matches and Pepe is set
to give the team a boost by returning in defence alongside Ricardo
Carvalho. While they seem a bit short of numbers in attack, the
movement of Raul Meireles and Deco could cause problems for the
Ivorians, especially as Sven-Goran Eriksson has spent so little time
in charge.
PREDICTION:
PORTUGAL TO WIN @ 2.15 with Expekt
Power Rating
Squad (3/5)
Strong, balanced and impressive. No team, not even Brazil, will be entirely comfortable facing them.
Squad (3.5/5)
Portugal have on paper some of the finest talent in European football and in Cristiano Ronaldo perhaps the best player the country has ever produced.
Coach (3/5)
Eriksson is a man who divides people utterly but he has got a talented squad in tournament conditions and he is being paid a lot of money. What more could he ask for?
Coach (3/5)
When he took Portugal to their second youth World Cup in 1991, Queiroz looked like one of the great coaches in the making. His career, however, has not quite fulfilled its early promise.
Attack (3/5)
Didier Drogba once more missed out on the Champions League winners’ medal he craves. Success in the World Cup is all the motivation he needs.
Attack (3.5/5)
With Cristiano Ronaldo to support the out-and-out forwards, Portugal are always capable of scoring. However, they lack formidable specialist strikers.
Defence (3/5)
The Toure brothers and Eboue provide the kind of steel that not many teams –let alone African teams - can call upon.
Defence (3/5)
Were Bosingwa and Pepe fully match fit, Portugal would score 3.5 out of 5 but these are big losses for any team to deal with.
