Incredibly, Italy will probably go
through to the last sixteen with three draws, although they will be
desperate to win this match and have an outside chance of avoiding
Holland in the last sixteen. The Azzurri have been disappointing in
both of their other Group F matches, especially in defence where they
have been slack with set pieces.
While it’s tempting to argue that the
Italians are always slow starters in major tournaments, the pre-World
Cup results weren’t particularly good and it appears that there’s
too much reliance on the midfield pairing of Daniele De Rossi and
Riccardo Montolivo to make things happen.
Slovakia also have a chance of going
through to the last sixteen and they were just as impressive as their
opponents when it came to qualifying for the World Cup. Sadly,
Vladimir Weiss’ team created little of note against the Paraguayans
and we can’t be too confident of their chances as tournament
rookies. A slender win for Marcello Lippi’s team looks to be on the
cards.
PREDICTION:
ITALY TO WIN 1-0 (5.5 with LADBROKES) OR 2-0 (6.0 with BET365)
Power Rating
Squad (2.5/5)
Hard working and efficient but lacking experience at this level.
Squad (3.5/5)
It is essentially the same team that won the World Cup in 2006, which brings advantages in terms of experience and problems in terms of age.
Coach (3/5)
His achievement in getting first Artmedia Bratislava into the Champions League and then Slovakia to the World Cup is proof that this is a man who relishes a challenge.
Coach (5/5)
By winning the Champions League, the World Cup and the Scudetto, Lippi has already established himself as one of his country’s greatest coaches. A repeat would place him as one of the all-time greats.
Attack (3/5)
Marek Hamsik is a footballer who is capable of turning any game with a single touch and only once in qualification did Slovakia fail to score.
Attack (3/5)
Luca Toni, Iaquinta, and Inzaghi are a formidable combination but many would prefer a few younger models.
Defence (2/5)
Despite the powerful presence of Martin Skrtel the fact is that Slovakia kept only three clean sheets in qualification – and one of those was against San Marino.
Defence (4/5)
Nobody defends like the Italians and the experience gained in Serie A and for the Azzurri will be brought to bear in this campaign.
