No
African nation has exactly excelled but the Cameroon’s display has been
probably the deepest low. Strongly-fancied with a stable set-up and a
high-class manager, they performed lamentably against Japan, wasted a
catalogue of chances against Denmark and became the first African
nation to be eliminated. The recriminations have already started with
Samuel Eto’o having already begun his campaign against manager Paul Le
Guen.
The
first team to qualify for the second round, meets the first team to be
eliminated from the World Cup. The big question for the Dutch manager,
Bert van Marwijk, is whether to risk Arjen Robben, who missed the
opening two victories, or keep him fresh for the round of 16. The odds
are that he will give the Bayern Munich playmaker some time on the
pitch.
There
is absolutely nothing riding on this match; Cameroon are a demoralised
team who have failed to win their last nine matches; while Van Marwijk
will be using the game for some fine tuning before the serious business
begins. “We can do much better than we have in our opening matches,” he
said: “I am taking this fixture very seriously because I want the
players to show they have learned lessons.” Cameroon have been warned.
Verdict: Holland to win.
Power Rating
Squad (3/5)
Attack and defence look well balanced but the point of weakness may be in midfield, where Geremi and Rigobert Song are starting to show their age.
Squad (4/5)
It may lack the individual sparkle and brilliance of Dutch squads in past World Cups but this is more of a team that most.
Coach (3.5/5)
Tough and uncompromising, Le Guen has come in to make some radical changes to Cameroon football and while the players may not like it, he seems to be succeeding.
Coach (3/5)
The one problem with Bert van Marwijk is that, apart from a Uefa Cup eight years ago, his record in terms of silverware is still pretty modest.
Attack (3.5/5)
There is so much riding on the shoulders of Samuel Etoo but if he wants to prove that he is the best footballer come out of Africa, this is his time.
Attack (3.5/5)
Assuming Van Persie is ready, the array of strikers and attacking midfielders available is a wide one, although they may be relying on a forward in Huntelaar who plays rarely for his club.
Defence (3/5)
As they proved in qualification, this is a very solid unit, performing in front of someone who by African standards is a very high-class keeper indeed.
Defence (3.5/5)
Those who watched this team qualify in Amsterdam and Rotterdam would not have seen the Dutch back four concede a goal. But do they have the class to come through a tough knockout stage?
