A miner’s son from Asturias in Spain’s far north, Villa finally struck financial pay dirt when concluding a €40m transfer to Barcelona, a signing 35,000 came to the Nou Camp to witness. The fact that Villa had repeatedly turned down Real Madrid, who accused him of “a lack of ambition” only added to the fervour.
