David Villa Sanchez

Profile:
A miner’s son from Asturias in Spain’s far north, Villa finally struck financial pay dirt when concluding a €40m transfer to Barcelona, a signing 35,000 came to the Nou Camp to witness. The fact that Villa had repeatedly turned down Real Madrid, who accused him of “a lack of ambition” only added to the fervour. Perhaps in Catalonia Villa will be in a position to add trophies to the kind of talent that saw him score a hat-trick inside five minutes in Bilbao’s San Mames stadium. One of the reasons that Spain’s Euro 2008 triumph was so precious to both Villa and his strike partner, Fernando Torres, was because it was the first major trophy either of them had won. Injury meant that Villa featured in neither the final against Germany nor the semi-final but he remained the tournament’s top-scorer.
