Introduction
Johannesburg, known as Jozi to many of its residents, is South Africa's biggest city and economic powerhouse. Measures to reduce the high crime rate have achieved some success.
History
Hardly a dot on the map until gold was discovered there in 1886, leading to a population explosion. After the Boer wars with the British, the chief conflict in the latter part of the 20th century was over apartheid, culminating in the freedom of Nelson Mandela and his election as president. The first post-apartheid city council was created in 1995.
Local Football
The Kaizer Chiefs, based in Soweto and the biggest club in the country, are probably best-known internationally because of the indie-Britpop band, the Kaiser Chiefs, who adopted the name when a former player with the team, Lucas Radebe, became captain of Leeds United, the team supported by the band.
Things to do
- Tour of Soweto, featuring Nelson Mandela's early homes.
- Apartheid Museum, illustrating the struggle against the brutal state system of racial segregation.
- The Lion Park: see more than 100 lions and stand nose-to-nose with giraffes.
- Gold Reef City theme park, created around a 19th century gold mine.
Stadium
Ellis Park Stadium, another World Cup venue, with a capacity of 62,000, hosted the final of the 1995 Rugby World Cup, won by South Africa. In 2001 it was the scene of tragedy, when 42 people died in a stampede during Orlando Pirates' home match against their fiercest rivals, Kaizer Chiefs.
