Introduction
While Mangaung means "place of the cheetahs" in the SeSotho language, Bloemfontein means "fountain of flowers" in Dutch. The joint Municipality, formed in 2000, is the home of the Supreme Court of Appeal.
History
Though historically a predominantly Afrikaner settlement, Bloemfontein was officially founded in 1846 as a British outpost. In the late 19th century, the area became a safe haven for tribes fleeing the forces of the Zulu king, Shaka Zulu, but in 1899, after the failure of a conference in the city, it witnessed the outbreak of the Second Boer War.
Local Football
The game was played as long ago as 1891 in Bloemfontein in the then Boer republic known as the Orange Free State. Bloemfontein Celtic sport similar green and white hoops to their Glasgow counterparts.
Things to do

- The Anglo Boer War Museum includes the National Women's Memorial, dedicated to the estimated 26,000 women and children who died in British concentration camps.
Stadium
Free State Stadium has hosted rugby and football matches since 1952 and is the home ground of the Bloemfontein Celtics. A second tier has been added to the main stand to bring the capacity to 48,000.
