Introduction
Port Elizabeth became part of the newly-named Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality in 2000. A busy port and the motor industry capital of South Africa, the area also has 40 kilometres of immaculate beaches.
History
Port Elizabeth was given its name in 1820 by the acting governor of the Cape Colony in memory of his wife. Early British settlers made a living from wool, mohair and the ostrich feather trade, but also had to contend with resistance to their presence from the Xhosa. The area's new name acknowledges the leading role of Mandela and other Eastern Cape black leaders in the fight against apartheid.
Local Football
In 2008, Bay United achieved their ambition of playing in the Premier League, but were relegated after one season.
Things to do
- Water sports including jet-skiing and wind-surfing, or scuba-diving to view the Bay's 400 historic shipwrecks.

Stadium
The new Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is the area's first major venue to be dedicated to football. With a capacity of 45,000, it will host eight matches, including the third place play-off.
