Introduction
South Africa's administrative capital, Pretoria is characterised by its graceful government buildings and staunchly Boer farming traditions. But many of its citizens are now Sotho and Ndebele and in 2000, the city was incorporated into the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality.
History
The Ndebele people were the area's first settlers, but in 1855 Dutch settlers proclaimed Pretoria, named after a Boer hero, Andries Pretorius, the first capital of the South African Republic. It was in Pretoria that Nelson Mandela was sentenced to imprisonment and, 33 years later, sworn in as president.
Local Football
Starting in 1988, Mamelodi Sundowns won the Premier League title five years running, while SuperSport United have been champions for the past two years.
