Liverpool - Villarreal

Can Liverpool maintain their attacking momentum as they host Villarreal at Anfield on 20 October 2026 for this Champions League matchday 3 clash? The hosts arrive with a fluid expected XI featuring Florian Wirtz and Ryan Gravenberch, aiming to build on a high-scoring 6-3 victory over LASK earlier this month. Liverpool will look to control the tempo through their midfield, though they must remain disciplined against a visiting side capable of tactical resilience.

Villarreal travel to England following a goalless draw with Elche, though their recent European form includes a notable 3-1 win against SSC Napoli. With Tajon Buchanan and Nicolas Pepe sidelined, the visitors will rely on the experience of Gerard Moreno and Georges Mikautadze to threaten the Liverpool backline. Having last met in the 2022 semi-finals, this encounter marks another chapter in a history of competitive European meetings between the two clubs.
