PFA Player of the Year Award Favourites for 2026/27

Let’s take a closer look at the favourites for this year’s award. These head the market for the 2026/27 season and will look to pick up the prize based on their performances across the campaign.

Erling Haaland - 4.00 Fav with bet365

Man City striker Erling Haaland won this award after the 2022/23 season and is the favourite to become another multiple winner. City have started well this season and look like pushing all the way to regain the Premier League title. Haaland has also been in the goals this season and seems back on top form.

Cole Palmer - 7.00

Cole Palmer saw his form drop off at the end of last season but has impressed for Chelsea in the opening weeks of the campaign and there should be more to come. He has linked up well with summer arrival Morgan Rogers and will be looking to lift Chelsea toward a potential title push.

Martin Ødegaard - 8.00

The Arsenal skipper will be keen to play a major role in helping his team to successive Premier League titles. He makes the champions tick but will need to step up another gear this season if he is to push himself towards this accolaid. If Arsenal are in with a chance of winning the league again he is scoring and assisting regularly then he could have an opportunity.

Bruno Fernandes - 10.00

Bruno Fernandes won this award last year after helping Manchester United to a Champions League spot. He played consistently well over the season and helped lift his team to a higher place than some expected. However, both he and United have not started the season well and it looks difficult for him to win again unless his form improves.

Rayan Cherki to be PFA Player of the Year - 11/1 with bet365

Man City Rayan Cherki could have a chance of winning this at a bigger price should he continue is early-season form. The French attacker has been among the goals and assists in the Premier League. Should City go on and win the league this season, he will have been at the heart of their creative efforts. Haaland may score the goals but Cherki offers a good alternative to his team-mate that sits at the head of the market.

What is the Premier League PFA Player of the Year Award?

The PFA Players’ Player of the Year award is one of the most prestigious individual honours in English football. It recognises the player considered to have delivered the best performances during a season, as voted for by their fellow professional footballers.

Presented by the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA), the award is part of the annual PFA Awards, which celebrate outstanding achievements across English football.

First awarded in 1974, the prize carries particular significance because the decision is made by players who understand the demands of competing at the highest level. Rather than being decided by journalists, managers or supporters, it reflects the views of professional footballers themselves.

There is also a PFA Young Player of the Year Award for players aged under 24. This doesn't mean that players under that age cannot win the main Player of the Year award.

How does the PFA Player of the Year award work?

The award follows a straightforward process:

  1. Players are nominated: Professional footballers put forward candidates based on performances during the season.

  2. Players vote: Eligible PFA members cast their votes for the player they believe deserves the award.

  3. Votes are counted: The player receiving the most votes wins the Players’ Player of the Year award.

  4. The winner is announced: The recipient is revealed at the annual PFA Awards ceremony.

The winner receives recognition from their peers, making the award a significant marker of individual excellence within the professional game. It differs in this regard to other awards like the Ballon d'Or, which is voted for by select journalists from a main shortlist.

PFA Player of the Year Voting Criteria

Unlike some individual football awards, the PFA Player of the Year award does not use a published points-based scoring system that assigns specific weights to goals, assists, appearances or trophies. Instead, it relies on the judgement of professional players voting for their peers.

The PFA does not publish a formal scoring rubric that requires voters to assess every player against the same statistical thresholds. However, several factors can reasonably influence how players judge a season's performances.

1. Individual Performances

Voters can consider how well a player performs in the Premier League across the season, including their technical ability, decision-making, influence on matches and ability to maintain a high standard over time. A player who delivers strong performances week after week may attract votes even without leading the league's statistical rankings.

2. Goals, Assists and Attacking Contribution

For forwards and attacking midfielders, goals, assists, chance creation and the ability to change games are obvious considerations. However, the award is not exclusively for attackers. A goalkeeper, defender or defensive midfielder can also win recognition for their contribution to their team's performances.

3. Influence on the Team

Players may consider how important a candidate is to their club, including their leadership, tactical role and contribution to winning matches. A footballer who consistently makes a difference in difficult games may be viewed favourably, even if their contribution is not fully reflected in traditional statistics.

4. Performances Relative to Expectations

Voters may also consider whether a player has exceeded expectations, improved significantly or established themselves as an outstanding performer in their position. This is a matter of individual judgement rather than a published eligibility or scoring requirement.

5. Team Success

Winning the Premier League or another major trophy can strengthen a player's case, particularly when they have played a central role in that success.

However, team trophies are not a formal prerequisite for winning the award. The decision is based on players' votes, so an outstanding individual season can be recognised even if the player's club does not win silverware.

Who is eligible to vote?

PFA members vote for players within their own league division, rather than simply choosing from players across the entire English football pyramid. The PFA's 2026 announcement confirms this same-league voting approach and publishes separate shortlists for different divisions and competitions.

The award structure includes recognition for men's and women's football, as well as individual divisions. This means the PFA Awards are broader than a single Premier League Player of the Year prize.

  • Recent winner: Bruno Fernandes won the 2025–26 award after being voted for by his fellow professionals.

Trends to Consider

  • Consider more attacking players - These have historically won more player of the year awards than their defensive counterparts.

  • Back-to-back wins aren't common - Some players, including Kevin De Bruyne in 19/20 and 20/21, have won it back-to-back but it doesn't happen

  • Goal contributions are key - Players heavily involved in both goals and assists are always high on the list for previous award winners.
